Free Kicks Foundation Appoint Ambassadors

E-mail Print PDF

We are delighted to announce that Free Kicks Foundation have appointed some very special ambassadors to help us promote our name in the world of football.

Posh team mates Aaron Mclean, Joe Lewis, Charlie Lee and George Boyd, have been chosen to carry out the role, similar to that of a patron, after showing consistent support for the charity since we started three years ago. The four players will act as role-models for Free Kicks, their names will be included on our literature and all have agreed to continue as ambassadors even if they move on to other clubs.

Free Kicks founder Steve Thorpe said "The four lads have always been so willing to help us out by giving us their time or donating items for us to raffle or auction. However, most valuable of all to us has been the time they have spent meeting the children we take to be mascots at Posh. They are never too busy to stop for a chat, sign autographs and pose for pictures with them...these moments usually prove to be the highlight of the day for these children. With Aaron, Charlie, Joe and George onboard we hope to use their names and contacts to increase our profile and support across the country."

Posh goalkeeper Joe Lewis said " I was honoured to be asked to become an ambassador for the Free Kicks Foundation. The players regularly see the children that the charity brings to the club for days out and also the great work the team do. I am delighted to help raise Free Kicks' profile in anyway I can."

Partnership with VARAS in Ghana

In 2009 the Free Kicks Foundation were approached by Atitsgobe Sylvester, who is Executive Director of VARAS, a charity based in Ghana. VARAS work through and by means of provision of local and international volunteer opportunities, aids, donations, and any other acceptable means to make living condition better for people in the rural areas of Ghana.

One of the ways VARAS wanted to improve the lives of the children in the area was by providing them with football kits and organising matches. They asked if we could send over some shirts and shorts and we were delighted to help. Having put a plea out via the Free Kicks facebook page and Peterborough United fans forum londonroad.net, we received a number of shirts. Alex Harris, Commercial manager at Peterborough United, also donated some shorts and match worn shirts.

The shirts finally arrived in Ghana after an epic 7 month journey and it was wonderful to receive some pictures of the children wearing their new shirts and shorts and playing a game of football.

We hope to collect more pieces of kit to send out to Ghana in 2011. If anybody would like to help us by either donating shirts or sponsoring the transportation of the packages, please get in touch!
